Work of Pontormo, anciently was attributed to Raffaello. In 1553 Giovanni della Casa went to Florence being at the pope's service . Giovanni della Casa is a writer of Latin and vulgar texts, and became famous with Galateo-Ragion di Stato. At the time he was thirty-three and Pontormo thirty-nine years old. He was already so famous that Pontormo decided to make a portrait of him. Another work with the same dimensions ,that is in U.S.A. , has been considered the portrait of della Casa for long time. Today we know that it is the portrait of Monsignor Ardinghelli.
The only known oil-portrait of della Casa is that by Pontormo. The table is 90 x 114 centimetres . It has a writing behind: "Giovanni della Casa work of Raf 1561". Maybe it was written in the XVIII century. Behind there are also two Tuscany customs seals and another two seals which represent the family shield of the owners of the collection. (Perhaps Contarini and Colonna family). In the XVIII century there was also the addition of the window with landscape set behind della Casa. This work is in good conditions though it was found in a house that has been greatly damaged during the 2 world war. It bought in Florence in 1940.

En 1533 Giovanni della Casa, renomé auteur de sonnets latins et textes en langue vulgaire, dont il devint auteur fondamental (Il Galateo , "Ragion di Stato") étant au service du Pape, se rend à Florence. Il a trente ans et le Pontormo en a trente neuf. Monseigneur della Casa était déjà célèbre et le Pontormo lui fit un portrait. Un autre portrait, qui se trouve aux Etats Unis, ayant les mêmes dimensions, a été considéré le portrait de della Casa pour de nombreuses années. On apprend aujourd'hui, au contraire, qu'il s'agit du portrait de Monseigneur Ardinghelli. Le seul portrait à huile de Monseigneur della Casa dont on a connaissance c'est celui réalisé par le Pontormo. Derrière le tableau de cm 90 x 114 on trouve l'inscription du XVIII siècle "Giovanni della Casa op di Raf 1561". On y trouve aussi 2 cachets de la Douane Toscane e deux autres représentant le sceau de famille des propriétaires de la collection dont il faisait partie à l'époque de la numération (probablement la famille Contarini e Colonna). L'ajoute de la fenêtre avec le paysage qui se trouve au dos de Monseigneur della Casa est attribuée elle aussi au XVIII siècle. Cette oeuvre tout en demeurant dans une maison qui a été fortement endommagée pendant la guerre, était en bon état et elle a été achetée à Florence en 1940.
